Not Your Father’s Tahoe - The 1996 Chevrolet Tahoe Base

June 18th, 2010

Those in the market for a truck who buy a Chevrolet Tahoe are often enthusiastic about their purchase. Since its launch the Tahoe has been one of the flagships of the Chevrolet brand. This has always been a meaningful truck, and the 1996 model is no different. A sport utility for everyone in the family is what the Chevrolet Tahoe provides.

Stop and Go

Chevrolet Tahoe Engine Specs: The Tahoe Base comes outfitted with a Vortec 5.7 liter, 8-cylinder motor that uses 16 valves. The engine, manufactured by General Motors, is mated to a four-speed transmission by General Motors. This arrangement has demonstrated to be an effective style for Chevrolet.

The Tahoe uses power-assisted brakes, with 4-Wheel ABS support. The front brakes are disc while the rear brakes are drum. Steering is handled through a power-steering gear-style configuration. The truck uses coil and leaf springs front and rear respectively.

Statistics

The Tahoe is 199.10 inches long, 76.40 inches wide, and 70.20 inches high. It has a wheelbase of 117.50 inches. It is able to seat 6 comfortably.

The original manufacturer suggested retail price (MSRP) was $30,464 when new, with a dealer invoice cost of an industry-average price. This price was in line with the industry average price for a 4-door Sport Utility.

Fuel Efficiency

The 1996 Tahoe’s standard fuel system runs on gas. The fuel is regulated electronically, with a fuel-injected MFI style of design. The fuel capacity of the truck is 30.00 gallons.

The Tahoe Base received a miles-per-gallon rating of thirteen in-city driving and seventeen when it came to highway driving. Being a gas-powered non-hybrid truck, this was within normal parameters.

Parting Shots

The 1996 model year was very successful for the Chevrolet Tahoe. The introduction of several trim levels (along with the Base version) meant that buyers could find the version that best suited their needs.

Good article. At first I felt like I needed to refute your review of the Chevrolet Tahoe, but after further reflection I can see your point of view. Perhaps my personal Tahoe Base is an abberation. What is everyone else’s experiences?
