Improving on 2003’s Model: The 2004 Suburban 1500 Revisited

January 14th, 2010

A high point in the sport utility market is the Chevrolet Suburban 1500. In 2004 Chevrolet rolled out an upgraded version of the Suburban 1500 with three versions: LS, LT, and Z71. Sales for the Suburban 1500, especially the Suburban 1500 LT, were brisk during 2004 and 2005. The improved reliability and the updated styling were responsible for the increased interest.

Stop and Go

The restyled Suburban 1500 LT is equipped with a 5.3-liter eight-cylinder engine that utilizes 16 valves. The Vortec engine is mated to a General Motors four-speed transmission. This has resulted in an increase in horsepower and torque over the 2003 version.

Steering control is handled through a power-steering gear-style configuration. The Suburban 1500 comes equipped with power-assisted brakes, with 4-Wheel ABS support. The front brakes are disc while the rear brakes are disc. The truck uses torsion bar front springs and coil in the rear.

Statistics

The Suburban 1500 is 219.30 inches long, 78.80 inches wide, and 75.60 inches high. It has a wheelbase of 130.00 inches. It is able to seat 9 comfortably.

The listed retail price in 2004 (MSRP) was $37,600, with a dealer invoice cost of $32,900. This price is in line with the industry average price for a four-door Sport Utility.

Fuel Efficiency

The fuel system for the 2004 Suburban 1500 is a SFI design, using FLEX fuel. The fuel flow is controlled by a electronic system and is a fuel-injected MFI design. The fuel capacity of the fuel tank is 31.00 gallons.

The 2004 Suburban 1500 gets 18 - 20 miles/gallon on the highway and only 14 - 15 in the city. This is below average for a sport utility truck.

What We Think of the Chevrolet Suburban 1500

The 2004 model year was very successful for the Chevrolet Suburban 1500. The introduction of several trim levels (along with the LT version) meant that buyers could find the version that best suited their needs.
